"Edge and Paul McCartney - september 4, 2004 - Dublin - BARRETSTOWN'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA BALL - Barretstown celebrated helping 10,000 kids in 10 years with a glittering gala ball. Paul McCartney, Heather Mills and U2's The Edge joined a host of top socialites to mark the 10th birthday with Hollywood actor Paul Newman, who founded the camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses. MC for the night was Father Ted's Ardal O'Hanlon and the guests dined and danced in a spectacular Kuam marquee in the grounds of Barretstown Castle, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare. The highlight of the night was when McCartney joined The Edge on stage to sing a duet of Peggy Sue while McCartney played the specially-commissioned Barretstown guitar. The guitar, made by Mark Nicol of County Wexford in the shape of the charity's castle logo, was snapped up by Cork art dealer Theo Waddington for a cool E55,000. Other items in the auction, led by Nick Nugent of Goffs, included a corporate package to see Manchester United play Liverpool at Old Trafford, a place on the Barretstown Challenge Trek to Brazil and a Golfing package to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Barretstown needs to raise E4 million each year to fund its programmes of challenges, activities and fun which aid in the recovery of sick children from across Europe. The star-studded occasion raised E440,000 for the charity on the night.

"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - september 1, 1984. Auckland, New Zealand - Logan Campbell Centre. While in Auckland, New Zealand, U2 hires local staff to assist its regular crew. One of the locals hired here is a Maori named Greg Carroll. The band is immediately impressed with Carroll, and Paul McGuinness offers him a permanent job on the tour, which he accepts. "Elevation" tour - september 1, 2001 - U2 performs its second outdoor show at Slane Castle north of Dublin. The concert was scheduled only after receiving special approval from County Meath planners and residents. It's the first time any band has been allowed to play two concerts at Slane Castle in the same year. The Ireland vs Holland match came on, the crowd were very nervous. Then came the goal from a strange player, who can't get his place on a 1st division Jason McAteer. And whata goal. Slane erupted! Moby was fantastic, he is such a people person, he is funny excentric and very energetic as is his bass player. He didn't stop and humbly thanked U2 for the support slot. Beautiful Day end with 'the goal is soul, a beautiful goal!' referring to Irelands win. And instead of the emotional references to Bono's Father of last week and now a load of refs to Ireland beating Holland. Bono actually rapped himself in the Tricolour during Newyears day, saying just for tonight just this once. Out of control was fabulous..."I want to thank Phillip Lynott for letting us open the show. We're a band from the north side of Dublin. We're called U2, this is our first single. We hope you like it...On the bass, from Malahide, Adam Clayton. On the drums, from the Artane Boys Band, Larry Mullen Junior. And this is Edge, I don't know where we got him...Father, I need a lend of 500 pounds. Because, we're gonna go over to London. And we're gonna score outselves a record deal. And when we get our record deal we're not gonna stay in London. We're not gonna go to New York City. We're gonna stay and base our crew in Dublin. Cause these people, this is our tribe. But I still need a lend of 500 pounds... what do you say? My old man, 500 pounds. I want to thank my old man for that 500 pounds. I want to thank Larry Mullen's father for 500 pounds. The Edge's mother and father for 500 pounds. Adam Clayton's family for 500 pounds. And by now you've probably all given us about 500 pounds each too. So thank you..." "Desire" On the drums Larry Mullen Jr. Bass guitar, born to have it, and have it he shall...Alright, so...Oh look Edge, a beachball. Can I just have that? Now there's faith...Was a bit GAA was it? That was a bit GAA". 'Bono says this is a song about friendship' Stuck In A Moment; The excellent Kite is next, Bono dedicates it to his Father. Afterwards, Bono tells a story of his father and The Edge's father falling down a street in New York, 'The Two of them absolutely Rat Arsed.' Bono dedicated All I want is You to his 'beautiful wife Ali', with a prolonged ending to the song. Bono sang 'All I want is' and the crowd replied 'You', Bono: 'All I Need Is' Crowd: 'You' excellent, lasting a couple of minutes. Mysterious ways came, Bono takes his daughter Eve on stage and she dances away to Mysterious Ways, classic as little Eve gives the dancing loads. It was a class version with Edge tearing in to the guitar. The song ends, Bono starts shouting, 'is there love in the house tonight, This is Our Love' and Pride played again...

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: 10 years-old girl on stage / Bono´s mic / a tribute to Princess Diana at Dublin concert - Edge´s 'Whiskey In The Jar' / U2 earns World Music Award !

Support is "Boots for Dancing".

"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - august 31, 1984. U2 perform in Wellington, Australia at the Show Building. During "New Year's Day", Bono's microphone starts to cut out. "POPMart" tour - august 31, 1997. U2 perform in Dublin, Ireland. August 31, 1997: U2 pays tribute to Princess Diana at Dublin concert. As U2 gets set to play its second show in Dublin, the world is stunned by the overnight death of Princess Diana, in a car crash in Paris. The crowd is somewhat subdued as they enter the stadium in the rain, but U2 plays a fireball of a show that gets everyone's heart racing. It is a more personal show than the night before, as several songs are dedicated to the band's families and friends. As "Gone" begins, Bono sings "She's gone ... she's gone...", the first of many references to Diana. During "Last Night on Earth," the ad-libbed bridge includes lyrics like "Beautiful girl, big black car...." After "Mysterious Ways" ends, Bono is walking back to the main stage with his head down and appears to be crying. He begins to sing "MLK," and just as he hits the second "sleep tonight" lyric, a Warholian-like image of Diana appears on the screen. It remains there through the song, and as the song closes Bono says, "I was stunned to hear the news today." As Edge starts into "One" he continues that thought: "I really think we all were," he says, and starts into the next song: "Is it getting better ....." 'WHISKEY IN THE JAR' is the song that Edge performed during his karaoke this nihgt, which he dedicated it to Paddy who runs the Dockers bar in Dublin.

During "Sattelite of Love", Lou Reed's image is flashed on the screens -- allowing Bono to duet with him for the rest of the tour. The version of "Love Is Blindness" performed tonight appears on the "Stay(Faraway, So Close)" single released in 1993. Support is B.P. Fallon, "Primus" and "Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy".

U2 pays for many local residents to vacation out of Dublin for the weekend, and those who choose to stay home are given free tickets to see the shows. As the band begins "Even Better Than the Real Thing," Bono mentions the struggle by telling the crowd, "We pulled it off! Paddy Power!" Later in the show, he announces "I wouldn't have you in MY back yard, either!"

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Rock on The Tyne Festival (lyrics and synch) / The 1st of 4 in New Zeland / 'New York, New York' at Yankee stadium / U2's Simpson's episode wins Emmy Award

"Boy" tour - august 29, 1981. U2 perform in Gateshead, England at the International Stadium as part of the "Rock on The Tyne Festival". "The Unforgettable Fire" tour - august 29, 1984. U2 play the first of four gigs in New Zealand in Christchurch, at the Town Hall. Original touring plans for New Zealand and Australia date back to 1982, when tour plans were scrapped. Again, in 1983, plans were scrapped for a tour of the two southern countries. Finally, U2 were going to play the countries--originally 3 concerts were announced, but after selling out quickly another 6 dates are added. Bono is forced to purchase a the U2 albums from a local record store, to aid him in remembering some of the guitar chords for some of the songs. U2 will start this tour by playing the "War" tour set, and then slowly work on new unreleased songs during soundchecks, and slowly introduce them into the sets.

"ZOOTV" tour - august 29, 1992. U2 perform in New York City, New York at Yankee Stadium. U2 are the second band to perform in Yankee Stadium -- The Beatles being the first. The shows are added in the middle of the tour as the Giants' Stadium, New Jersey shows on August 12, 13, 1992 do not satisfy demand for tickets in the area. The show has many small Bill Clinton remarks, as the band had spoken to him on August 28, 1992 on Rockline, a North American syndicated radio talk-show. Bono calls the White House and asks for George Bush, "What do you mean George Bush isn't available? Bill talked to us last night!" During the acoustic set, the band perform a bizarre and funny version of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York". Support is B.P. Fallon, "Primus" and "Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy".

The Edge and Bono perform "Can't Help Falling In Love", and Bono comments, "Elvis does the kind of 'down on one knee' version -- I do the sort of 'Irish Catholic guilt' version..." Bono attempts to get through to the White House, but the operator hangs up upon recognizing his voice. Then US Presidential candidate Willam "Bill" Clinton calls the show. Even though the phonecall was previously planned, it is presented to the listening audience as if it were a total surprise(Paul McGuinness would later reveal in an interview that the phonecall was Clinton's staff's idea). Herman announes, "Our next caller is named Bill, and he's from Little Rock, Arkansas. Hi Bill, what's your last name?" "Clinton," the caller announces. "Bill Clinton?! Sir, it's a pleasure having you on the air with us!" "I can't believe I got U2 on the phone," Clinton says. "Hi, this is Bono here...how do you want us to call you? Should we call you Governor or Bill?" "Bill," Clinton replies gratiously. "Bill? Alright, you can call me Betty," Bono jokes, resulting in laughter in the studio. Bono and Clinton discuss several topics, including Parental Guidance warnings on music albums: "Are politicians qualified to decide what is, and what isn't art?" Clinton replies that he is against censorship, and compares the Parental Guidance warnings to the Movie Ratings System employed in Hollywood. He also mentions his continued support for the National Endowment for the Arts. Clinton also adds, "I want to say, as a middle-aged man, that I appreciate the fact that you made 'The Joshua Tree' and that record 'Angel of Harlem' in Sun Studios. You made me feel like I had a place in rock music, even at 46." Bono replies with a small jibe, "Well, Bill, if we got you into it, we must be doing something wrong..." Both Clinton and the RockLine group laugh. "I have some problems imaging you pogoing to our music," Bono finishes, "But I'm very glad that you've listened to our records. Thanks for calling."

"ZOOTV" tour - august 27, 1992. U2 perform in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the Olympic Stadium. For "The Fly", many of the slogans are translated into French, as was done in France on the European leg. "What time is it?" Bono asks, quoting Axl Rose. A few weeks before, "Guns'N'Roses" and "Metallica" had performed at the Olympic Stadium. In a bizarre pyrotechnic accident, the lead singer of Metallica, James Hetfield burned his hand during the show. After "Metallica" ended their set early, "Guns'N'Roses" was forced to go on early. After asking the crowd, "What time is it?" and then announcing, "We gotta go..," Axl Rose ended the show after only four songs. A melee ensued with almost $10,000 fans rioting in Montreal. Daniel Lanois joins U2 at the B-stage with a guitar to perform with them -- it's his first guest appearance at a U2 concert even though his credits with the band go back into the Eighties. During "Desire" a fan jumps up on the stage and is immediately tackled by a large security officer -- Bono waves security off and sits and sings the rest of the song directly to the fan. Within hours, the song is available from many U2 fan sites as a downloadable MP3 -- all this some three weeks before the song is supposed to be released to radio stations. A notice on the band's official site, U2.com, says DJ Sarah received the song on CD as a wedding present from Bono and that she aired an unfinished demo version. Meanwhile, with radio stations around the world beginning to play the demo version obtained on the Internet, Interscope Records rushes to release a finished version of the song for radio play. "Boy" tour - august 24, 1981. U2 perform in Odel, England as part of the England - Greenbelt Arts and Music Festival. U2 make an unscheduled appearance at a Christian music festival in Odel, England. Bono tells the crowd, "This is the first time we've ever played to a Christian audience, but you're just as rowdy and noisy as everyone else!" The energy and passion of Bono, and most of all the chiming guitars of Edge, were a revelation.

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - august 24, 1993. U2 perform in Cork, Ireland at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Prior to a show in Cork, Ireland, a local governing body bans the sale of U2 condoms at the concert. As ever, Edge's often electronically-agitated guitar lent shape and shadow to every song. Numb is solid enough.

Bono lays his father to rest - august 24, 2001. Bono's father, Bob, is laid to rest today at Old Balgriffin Cemetary in County Dublin. He died of cancer three days earlier. During the funeral at Church of the Assumption, Howth, Bono tells the congregation that his dad had "more rock and roll than most of my friends." Bono and Edge sing a song called "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" which includes the lyrics: "Sing, you're the reason I sing/ You're the reason why the opera is in me."

After the show, U2 give a press conference at which Bono is asked about U2's future plans, "It's very easy to become a parody of yourself. We work in a sort of improvisation. The Edge would play his guitar and we'd say, 'Hey, don't play that, that sounds too much like U2!' And we'd say 'But we are U2!' We must develop new areas. Those first three records are part of a whole, and we feel it's finished. We feel that U2 are to disband. Today was the last U2 gig. I'm not talking about the end of U2 -- I'm talking about the start of U2. U2 is just beginning. This is the end of a cycle."

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Lorely Festival in 1983 / Negativland´s atittude / Larry´s "Whiskey In The Jar" / Expo2000 in 1997-"Suspicious Minds" / U2 announces ATYCLB!

August 20 1983 U2 perform in St. Goarshauren, Germany at the Loreley Ampitheatre, as part of the Loreley Festival. Other performers of note include "The Stray Cats", Joe Cocker and Steve Miller. The concert is shown live on WDR-TV, the first time U2 has performed live on TV. The show is later aired on radio in Germany on the "Rockpalast" radio series. The show has a major impact on U2 sales in Germany, and as a result two singles "Two Hearts Beat As One" and "40" are released in Germany only. The "40" single carries a sticker that says "The discovery of Loreley 1983". U2 listen to the radio recording of the concert and decide that certain songs were performed better here than at the Red Rocks concert on June 5th, 1983. Five songs from this show make it onto the "Under A Blood Red Sky" EP: "I Will Follow", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Electric Co.", "New Year's Day" and "40".

'Negativland releases U2 single' - AUGUST 20, 1991. Electronic band Negativland releases a single called "U2" on the SST record label. The song is a collage which includes unauthorized samples of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" song from 1987, plus outtakes of radio host Casey Kasem trying to introduce U2's song on his "American Top 40" program. The Negativland track catches the attention of Island Records, however, more for its packaging -- the letter "U" and the numeral "2" appear in large type, while "Negativland" appears in small print at the bottom.

"ZOOTV" tour - august 20, 1992. U2 perform in Foxboro, Massachusetts at Foxboro Stadium. The three concerts have U2 performing in front of approximately 150,000 fans. The first two shows sell out in one day and a third date is added. The gross earnings for the three shows is close to $4.5 million US. On the first night, Bono asks the crowd if anyone in the crowd had been present at the now infamous Paradise Theater show in 1980. As the almost 55,000 fans cheer, Bono laughs and replies, "I think we've got 55,000 liars here!" Larry performs "Whiskey In The Jar" tonight, much to the delight of the crowd. Support is B.P. Fallon, "Primus" and "Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy".

"ZOOTV-Zooropa" tour - august 20, 1993. U2 perform in London, England at Wembley Stadium.

"POPMart" tour - august 20, 1997. U2 perform in Hannover, Germany. U2 christens the site in Hannover, Germany, where "Expo 2000" will begin a little less than 3 years away, on June 1, 2000. Edge´s karaoke this night is "Suspicious Minds"

'U2 announces All That You Can't Leave Behind' - august 20, 2000. U2 announces All That You Can't Leave Behind as the title of their next album on the band's official web site. They also confirm a late Autumn release date and the full track listing for the album.

This track is said to have been recorded by fans outside Bono's house in the south of France, and the voices of those fans are the most prominent sound heard. But just like the "All Because of You" clip in early July, online fans are generally pleased with what they hear from U2 in the new clip.

"War" tour - august 14, 1983. U2 perform in Dublin Ireland at the Phoenix Park Racecourse as part of the "A Day At The Races" concert. U2 headline the bill. Other acts include "The Eurythmics", "Simple Minds", and "Big Country". Bono introduces "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by asking a fan for his Irish Tri-Color: "There's been a lot of talk about this flag, and about this next song." Violinist Steve Wickham joins the band for the song, and stays through "Electric Co.". Bono climbs the scaffolding around the stage, and attracts criticism for being to repetitive--many in the audience have seen the stunt before. "I Fall Down" is dedicated to the drummer of one of the opening bands, "Stiff Little Fingers"; Jim Reilly had lost his brother the previous week in Belfast. Bono's father, Robert Hewson, makes his first appearance on a U2 stage when he gets pulled up in front of the 20,000 fans at the show. As in Werchter on July 3, 1983, Annie Lennox joins the band for "40". The audience sing the chorus for more than 15 minutes after U2 leave the stage.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - august 14, 1987 - U2 announces the itinerary for its fall tour of the U.S. in a nationally syndicated broadcast from New York City.

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - august 14, 1993. U2 perform in Leeds, England at Rounday Park.

Bono tells the audience, "The Russians came with tanks. We, the Irish, come with a lemon." Edge´s karaoke this night is "Born To Be Wild" - one of the most powerful moments, videos from the movie Easy Rider and text appearing on the screen so everybody could sing "like a true nature child we were born BORN TO BE WILD!!!"

"Elevation" tour - august 14, 2001 - Birmingham / UK - NEC Arena. 'I Will Follow'...after the 'Your eyes'...Edge in particular seems to really get into the groove, stamping his leg in time with the beat and thoroughly enjoying every second. This night, Edge wears burgundy shirt # 7.

60th 'VERTIGO' show - august 14, 2005 - Lisbon, Portugal - Estadio Jose Alvalade - The Kaiser Chiefs. Order of Liberty before the show / Bono spoke in Portuguese: 'Se falasse portugues diria obrigado!' / Edge thanked the interview / encouraging people of Portugal to do more to fight extreme poverty / a cardboard image / Portugal´s President is at the show! Keane are unable to fill their opener slot because singer Tom Chaplin is sick. Earlier in the day, U2 receives the Order of Liberty from Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio. Sampaio is reportedly at the show tonight. **** Thank You and Goodnight, Europe: Thirty Two Great Nights in Europe come to a close in Lisbon, Portugal....'Myself, The Edge, Adam and Larry ... today we became Portuguese,' he explained, referring to their visit to the Presidential Palace earlier in the day to receive the Order of Merit. 'We wanna thank you for making us so welcome and we wanna thank the President for pinning this great badge on our chest.' Honours are cool of course but, as Larry never fails to point out, this is a band who are not at the end of their career. 'We're just getting started!' added Bono, to wild cheers as Still Haven't Found cracked open the night and Lisbon became the City of Blinding Lights. 'So tonight is the last night of our European tour and this is a good place to end,' continued Bono. 'Some very beautiful girls,' he noticed, before dedicating Miracle Drug to a children¿s hospital and recalling the author Christopher Nolan. 'It's about a boy we went to school with who was asleep until a little pill which awakened him and he was able to write beautiful poetry. He wrote a book called Damburst of Dreams. His mother always believed in him, that he was awake.'...'It's going to get harder and harder to coexist,' predicted Bono, but that's the spirit of Sunday Bloody Sunday, Love and Peace and Bullet the Blue Sky. 'No more no more' echoed hugely around the stadium, as the night flew by. There's special mention for the man who recorded Miss Sarajevo, at the show tonight, and as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights scrolls up the rear of the stage in gigantic letters, tonight it's in Portuguese - much to the delight of the locals. 'What is going on?' asks a tired but jubilant Bono surveying the chanting of the audience. 'I want to salute the people from Make Poverty History in Portugal. If you want to take out your cell phones and make this place into a Christmas tree.. You can text us / Join us / Email us / Our time is coming / Our generation has something to do / It has fallen on us to say no to extreme poverty / We can say NO../ We want Portugal to lead and not to follow in the fight against extreme poverty / We believe that this government will do it but only if you tell them to..'...Special thanks for crew members as Yahweh arrives, with accompanying brilliant animations and then, in a neat twist on recent shows, there is no second Vertigo but instead the beautiful '40' closes a beautiful European tour. **** Honoured In Lisbon : The band received the Order of Liberty in Portugal tonight, honouring their longtime humanitarian work. President Jorge Sampaio made the award at the presidential palace a few hours before tonight's Lisbon show. He commended U2 for many years combining 'the public exposure it received from its musical success with the protection of humanitarian causes.' Bono took the opportunity to encourage the people of Portugal to do more to help fight extreme poverty. **** Bono and a cardboard image: ...During Electric Co, Bono pulls a life size cardboard image of himself from the audience. He kisses and cuddles it and then lets go of it. Before Haven´t Found, Bono thanks the Portuguese president for the Order of Liberty given to the band a few hours before the show, and he quips the band has now become Portuguese....entering the stadium is quite controlled and orderly....Bono's daughters 'n' friends have been spotted in the audience....**** 'If I could talk Portuguese I would like to say thank you' = 'Se eu falasse portugues diria obrigado!' (on truth, Bono spoke in Portuguese) / Bono´s daughters and sons were at ceremony, very proud of their Dad / the fans runned behind Bono´s car, who appeared from the window and waved to the fans, total hysteria in Lisbon! He thanked the interview that Correio da Manhã made with him: Delírio a ver U2 - Bono encantou completamente os seus fãs portugueses. Aí, agradeceu a entrevista que o CM lhe fez e desapareceu logo a seguir....correiomanha **** U2: Freedom to believe: ...the concert of the year...Cause U2 know make the perfect wedding between the musc and the ethic, the magnitude and the proximity, the technoly and the human, the minds and the hearts...We just can believe...U2 had the audience in their hands since the first moment. But what he has in his hands, Bono cares, as a love which shouldn´t to be as guaranteed. Then he feeds with his credibility, his charisma...The freedom to fight against poverty. The freedom to coexist with harmony. The freedom to believe that 'I can make the difference'...publico **** Some photos on: U2-Vertigo-tour and Interference

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Berlin Wall went up / Recording sessions of U2-3 / Lou Reed taped his part on 'Satellite Of Love'!

Recording sessions of U2-3 - august 13, 1979 - Maybe, yesterday, maybe today, maybe tomorrow, but this fact is around this date, when after another incredible gig at Dandelion Market, U2 move across town to Windmill Lane where they are booked from 6 in the evening until midnight to work on some favorites - "Stories For Boys," "Boy/ Girl" and "Out Of Control." Edge, Larry and Adam are in the main studio, while an engineer plays jazz piano and the microphone's set up in the control room. Neither Adam nor Larry is the world's best timekeeper and without the fuss and fury of a live show to hide behind, their tempos are not to be trusted. They have problems with "Out Of Control."....read my version of the story of U2-3 here.

Berlin Wall went up - august 13, 1961 - The day the Berlin Wall went up. Bernauer Strasse where the communist authorities first sealed the border on August 13, 1961. Cold War division and the legacy of the wall was "a stone symbol of a policy of violence". Faced with a mass exodus of dissidents that had reached up to 1,700 per day, the East German authorities closed all routes to the west that summer night. Residents woke to find themselves trapped in the communist sector and in countless cases separated from their families who lived on the other side of the divide. Estimates of the number of people killed when trying to cross the Berlin Wall are still hotly debated, nearly 17 years after the wall fell in a bloodless revolution. Researchers said they have firm proof of 125 cases where people were killed by armed border guards while trying to make it across the wall. But a prominent victims' association, the August 13 Working Group, put the figure at more than 200 after the 155-kilometer-long (96-mile-long) wall went up in 1961. It argues that the total number of people killed between 1945 when the Soviets took control of the eastern sector of Germany and 1989 is at least 1,201 including deaths at the Berlin Wall dividing the city and at the 1,400-kilometer-long border between East and West Germany.

"ZOOTV" tour - august 13, 1992. U2 perform in East Rutherford, New Jersey at Giants' Stadium. Over the two days' concerts, U2 perform in front of 109,000 people -- the first night's show sells out in 23 minutes, becoming Giants' Stadium's fastest sellout ever. The second nights show is better -- the nervousness that pervaded the show on the first night seems to be gone. "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" are added to the setlist. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is played acoustically. Over the two nights, U2 perform in front of 109,000 fans. Earlier in the day, Lou Reed is taped singing along in duet-style to "Satellite of Love", and this taped performance will be used later in the tour to allow a virtual duet each show with Reed and Bono. Support is B.P. Fallon, "Primus" and "Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy".

Tonight's show would also mark the last of about ten satellite hookups with Bill Carter in Sarajevo.

"Elevation" tour - august 11, 2001 - Manchester - England - MEN Arena - Kelis. U2 vocalist Bono made an emotional tribute to his father Bob Hewson -- who is believed to have cancer and is said to have "just days to live" -- at the first U.K. show of the band's world tour. "Kite" is dedicated for Bob Hewson. "This is a song for my father who has only a few days to live. This is for him the tough old fella." The U2 vocalist also called for peace in Northern Ireland as the political situation reaches a critical stage with the Stormont Assembly reconvening to discuss ongoing problems in the country. He told the cheeing crowd during the band's famous hit "Sunday Bloody Sunday": "Compromise is not such a bad word after all. Our prayer is that this week brave people make brave decisions and this little island across the little channel does not go back to war." Edge wears this night burgundy#7.

Were they inspired by the gig? With Electric Co. tonight The Edge joined Adam facing Larry on the main stage to rock out at the end of the song. Elevation saw the audience get completely behind the singing and added to the whole experience and sound. Full of enthusiasm the Madrid audience went into their own 'Ole Ole' at the end of Beautiful Day and beautiful it was. 'Grandous cahones, we're a band from the north side of Dublin called U2 and its good to be here in such fine company, And we're just getting started alright'...During the day off Edges birthday was celebrated with a great night in Canne and a great birthday cake too. 'One of the great nights of our life was a concert in Madrid in 1987 Long time ago And its great to feel that feeling once again' 'This is a song about the future and its dedicated to the scientists who are Dreaming up the future' 'There's a hospital here in Madrid A children's hospital - I cant remember the name' Bono then put his ear to the audience and the microphone to the audience too. With that the chant starts from the audience, they know the name 'Nino Jesus, nino Jesus' Edge then starts into Miracle Drug, followed by Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, and Love & Peace which again features many of the audience on shoulders enjoying seeing the full band on the b-stages. Tonight Larry plays the drum in a different position enjoying seeing his fans so close up....'It says Coexist / A Beautiful piece of graffiti / Coexist / Something to hold on to / Especially in the city of Madrid' / 'Please, please get up of your knees / Oh America / Safe Home Johnny' As the band started Miss Sarajevo 'We'd like to dedicate the songs to the families and friends who lost loved ones in London, Egypt and Turkey, But especially in the city of Madrid (huge applause) Our Prayer is we do not want to become a monster in order to defeat a monster.' When the human rights text starts it is in Spanish, captivating the audience. This is the first time the text has been in Spanish as it was in Catalan in Barcelona, Basque in San Sebastian and now Spanish in Madrid. During Streets Adam and his low riding bass move around the stage as does Bono and while walking back on the b stage to the 'ole oles' the audience were singing again, he pulls up two ladies with the Spanish 'Make Poverty History' banner - Pobreza Cebo....Before One Bono speaks to the audience about the Make Poverty History Campaign...'Send a message to you Prime Minister Azanar' 'Thank you thank you for listening to a rock star whack on Matthew Freud for working on the campaign Thank you' When One ends, all the band gather on the front of the stage and take a bow to huge applause. Madrid is likely not to forget this concert for a long time. The gig ends with Yahweh and another rendition of Vertigo to end the night on a high.**** Great work of Edge: ....Also, the great work of The Edge. The guitarist of U2, as a sideman, constructs the basics of U2´s sounds...abc ****El grupo irlandés arrasó en Madrid con el último de sus tres conciertos en España...."What a night!"

'Bat, bi, hiru...hamalau': It was another celebration tonight of U2's Vertigo Tour while they are playing in Spain....Bono opened the show saying 'Uno, dos, tres...catorce' in Basque which won the crowd over instantly....City of Blinding Lights and towards the end Bono started singing 'San Sebastian San Sebastian'. It was then that the audience began a fantastic football type chant to which Bono replied, 'I hope that means something beautiful'. Introducing Miracle Drug, Bono spoke about how 'The Edge comes from the future, on a space ship especially made for him. From a brithday 1000 years in the future, came back to be with us in 1976'. The crowd laughed and applaused allowing Bono to finish with 'Excuse my ramblings', even through the crowd were loving it....As the temperatures rise Bono introduces 'Sometimes' not before a sip of water and removing his glasses. 'This next ones for my father Bob. He was a toughie'. The audience didn't notice a few extra cameras here tonight as the band are doing an interview with Ed Bradley from 60 minutes. ...'CoeXisT'...'You know what I'm talking about, / Something that's going to happen over the next 3 years, / Hold on to this tightly, / Even in san Sebastian, / All sons of Abraham.'...During Streets Bono gave Adam a kiss as Adam walked up and down the B-Stage....**** The Edge the true star of the night in music terms: ...Miracle Drug y Love and Peace or Else, dos de los temas favoritos de The Edge, verdadero protagonista de la noche en el terreno musical con una verdadera exhibición de guitarras y capacidad de llenar con sus característicos arreglos la esencia de todo el repertorio....on Diario Vasco **** 40,000 quiver at Anoeta stadium with U2: The Irish band combined music, sight, and protests against world hunger and in favour of peace. Bono managed to win the affection of the spectators by singing "Uno, dos, tres...catorce" in Basque. U2 did not let spectators down. The Irish band showed its talent at Anoeta stadium of Donostia-San Sebastián. With red and black colours standing out in the stage design, Bono and his band made 40,000 spectators quiver last night. Instead of starting "Vertigo" song with "Uno, dos, tres...catorce", Bono opted for "Bat, bi, hiru...hamalau", its analogue in Basque, a way to receive the spectators in each of the concerts the band is giving. It was nearly 22:00 p.m., but that was not the only knowing wink to the Basque audience as many articles of the Human Rights appeared on screen written in Basque. THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: The Edge was born / 2st - 26th - 32nd - 40th and 44th Edge´s B-Day!!!!

"The Edge"...august 8, 1961. Dave "(Mister)The Edge" Evans born in Barking Maternity Hospital, east London.

"On 21st Edge´s B-Day" - august 8, 1982. U2 begin working with Steve Lillywhite on their third album in Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin.

"On 26th Edge´s B-Day" - august 8, 1987. U2 perform in Cork, Ireland at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Before the show, the band meet with Paul McGuinness and some Island Records staff--including tonight's show, the European Leg of the tour is attended by 1,196,830 people. It's The Edge's 26th birthday and Bono starts the show again by walking out and singing to the background track of "Stand By Me". He shouts, "Happy Birthday Edge!" and Bono jams the microphone in front of The Edge, who sings a few lines of the song. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is performed twice--in a row. The crowd sing it so well, Bono starts the song anew. During the bridge of the song, he calls out Irish city names: "Belfast! Derry! Cork! Dublin! Waterford! Galway! Sligo!" while the crowd sing "No More!" after each one. Bono honours the many members of the road crew that come from Cork during "Pride(In the Name of Love)": "I want to sing this for Corkmen...Joe O'Herlihy, for Tim Buckley, for Tom Mullally, for Sammy over here behind the drum kit,...Steve Iredale, because without these people working day in and day out, putting up stages, taking down stages, putting them into trucks, driving the trucks and all in the name of love.." The mood is extremely festive as the band return to the stage for the encore. During "Party Girl" Bono calls out, "Anyone know what The Edge wants? How about a birthday cake?" and a huge cake is wheeled out onto the stage. "So Edge, why don't you just give me the guitar here, and why don't you just try a slice of the birthday cake?" At that moment, Aisling, The Edge's wife, jumps out of the cake and showers everyone on stage with champagne. "My God, Edge...it's the missus!" Bono says to a laughing The Edge. "And what a beautiful party girl she is tonight! The best birthday present you can give Edge is his wife Aisling!" A wild version of "Out of Control" follows "Party Girl", the first time the song has been played on the tour. "40" ends the night, with Bono, Adam, and The Edge walking off stage and leaving Larry drumming. The crew up on the stage, release a hundred ping-pong balls which shower Larry, who laughs at the little joke. Support is "The Dubliners", "The Subterraneans", and "UB40". After the show, the band retire to the south of France for several weeks to relax with their families and write some new material --ostensibly for the next album.

"On 32nd Edge´s B-Day" - august, 8 1993. U2 perform in Glasgow, Scotland at Celtic Park. After the satellite link up Bono sang Happy Birthday to the Edge and made him sing an unrehearsed version of Lost Highway. Most of the crowd felt sorry for him as this was obviously Bono putting him on the spot as he struggled to complete two verses!

"On 40th Edge´s B-Day" - august 08, 2001 / Barcelona, Spain - Palau St. Jordi - Stereophonics. 'Spanish Eyes' makes its Elevation Tour debut, with a full version of the song performed by the entire band. First time it's been played since May 14, 1992's performance in Spain. The crew brings out a birthday cake during Mysterious Ways for the Edge (from the back of the stage appeared 6 pictures of different ages from The Edge (Joshua,Pop...) with girls holding a cake.)

"On 44th Edge´s B-Day" - august 8, 2005 / Cannes, France. During the day off the show, Edges birthday was celebrated with a great night in Canne and a great birthday cake too.

"ZOOTV" tour - august 7, 1992. U2 perform in Hershey, Pennsylvania at Hershey Stadium. Rumours that the week-long rehearsals will result in a try-out concert are proven true when Bono lets it slip that fans will be able to see what the band has been up to by the end of the week. On August 5, 1992, tickets go on sale for a show on August 7, 1992. The ticket stubs say "Outside Rehearsal" and are priced cheaply at $15US. Remarkably, the show starts with "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "New Year's Day" and "Pride(In The Name Of Love)". During "New Year's Day", Bono hands a birthday cake to The Edge, whose birthday will take place the next day. U2 leave the stage after the first 3 songs, and start ZOO TV. The Presidential Seal of The United States Of America appears, and the voice over announces, "Laides and gentlemen, the President of the United States." President George Bush appears on the video screens, and a stunned crowd roar as doctored footage of the President force him to announce, "We will, we will rock you." The deep drum beat of Queen starts in the background as the doctored footage continues, "We will, we will rock you. Some may ask, why rock out now? The answer is clear: These are the times that rock man's soul. I instructed our military commanders to totally rock Baghdad. And I repeat this here tonight: We will, we will rock you. Let me say this for everyone listening to Washington tonight: may God continue to rock our nation, the United States of America." The George Bush Rap had been produced by a Boston, Massachusetts area company called Emergency Broadcast Network. The original video of the Rap had been sold the previous year at the Lollapalooza festival in North America. During the show, Bono acknowledges the fans who had been listening in the parking lot during the rehearsals: "Well, does it sound any better in here? All I know is you guys were having a lot more fun outside than we were inside trying to build this fucking thing!" "Whose Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" starts with the usual organ sound, but then it is turned off as Bono's singing and the organ don't match -- he sings it acoustically. Belly-dancer Christina Petro is no longer with the tour -- she is replaced by Morleigh Steinberg. New props show and video images show up during the show -- a shopping cart with an inflatable fish for "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World", the image of a reclining woman is shown during "With Or Without You", and sounds of helicopters during "Running To Stand Still". Proceeds from tonights show are donated to local charities -- HELP Ministries of Christian Churches United, Channels Food Distribution, AIDS Assistance Network, Special Olympics of Pennsylvania, and United Cerebral Palsy. Support is B.P. Fallon and "WNOC".

"ZOOTV - Zooropa" tour - august 7, 1993. U2 perform in Glasgow, Scotland at Celtic Park. As the Sarajevo satellite linkups continue at tonight's show in Glasgow, U2 receive some criticism in the media that they are still the same U2 of the 80s for trying to address political issues.
