"New Year´s Day" - january 1, 1983 - U2 releases the "New Year's Day"/"Treasure (Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop)" single from their upcoming third album. This will become U2's first Top 10 single in the U.K. New Year's Day was the first single released from the War album. It also appeared on U2's EP and video for Under A Blood Red Sky and the Best of 1980-1990/B-sides compilation. The cover of the single features Peter Rowan who is the brother of Derek 'Guggi' Rowan. New Year's Day was one of three songs from the upcoming album premiered in Glasgow on December 1, 1982 when Bono informed the crowd that the single would be available in stores on New Year's Day. However, the song ended prematurely due to feedback from Edge's amplifier. U2 played the song for the first time in Belfast on December 20th stressing that it's not a rebel song. A live version, recorded at the Rockpalast '83 concert in Lorelei, Germany on August 20, 1983 appears on the EP Under A Blood Red Sky. It was voted No. 6 in the Best Single category in the New Musical Express poll and No. 9 in the Best Single category in the Sounds poll and became U2's first top 10 single in the UK. It reached No. 53 on the Billboard charts. New Year's Day remains a popular song for other artists to sample or cover.

So, knowing they were not going to stop people from taping the concert anyway, U2 offered its fans an added bonus -- pre-printed inlay covers to use in the case around the cassettes. According to Billboard magazine, the cover listed the details of the performance and was included in the Jan. 25 issues of the European pop music magazines Q and Hot Press.- St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Irish DJ Dave Fanning introduces the band to the world: "Alright everybody, say hello to welcome Europe to the Point Depot! Live from Dublin City, where the band who are going to play for you tonight is the band that started out in this city ten years ago and who've dominated the Eighties!" THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: "...The guitar player of his generation: The Edge!" / "...We have to go away and just dream it all up again"!
"LoveTown" tour - december 30, 1989 - Dublin / Ireland - The Point Depot. After two days off, the local papers report that the band are breaking up, and the news is carried around the world in a matter of days. The band take two days off(the concert for the 29th is cancelled so that Bono could rest his voice), and the third show is considered one of the best performances U2 has given in Ireland. After "I Will Follow", Bono mocks himself: "Anything you want me to give out about? Sellafield? That's about 60 miles from here...It's a lot further to Margaret Thatcher's house..." Bono asks for silence before singing "Running to Stand Still" and adds a verse of "Dirty Old Town". "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is dedicated to the Birmingham Six, the six Irishmen imprisoned for IRA crimes they didn't commit. During the guitar solo in "Out Of Control" Bono raps in admiration: "Check out the boots! Check out the pants! The hairdo! The guitar player of his generation: The Edge!" The encore has the band premiering "She's a Mystery To Me", a song written (Bono and Edge) for Roy Orbison, and recorded in 1987 at Sun Studios (this version has never been released). During "Love Rescue Me", Bono comments on the past four month "LoveTown" tour: "We've had a lot of fun, just getting to know the kind of music that we didn't know so much about. I was explaining to people the other night, but I might have gotten it a bit wrong, that this is just the end of something for U2...and that's why we're playing these concerts. We're throwing a party for ourselves and for you. It's no big deal. We have to go away and just dream it all up again." The second encore on the evening sees the band playing "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" for the first time since December 12, 1987. Support is B.B. King.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: ADAM IS SAFE / Bono at radio!
"ADAM CLAYTON IS SAFE..." - december 28, 2004 - Search on for Irish in aftermath of chaos - Dublin officials get 1,000 calls from relatives - 28 December 2004 - EFFORTS were under way today to track down Irish holidaymakers still missing in the aftermath of the tidal wave disaster that has claimed more than 23,000 lives across south Asia. Dozens of Irish people are reported missing in the devastated holiday resort of Phuket, Thailand, among them two women who are presumed drowned. However, reports that rock star Adam Clayton was stranded amid the chaos in southern Asia have been denied. The U2 bass guitarist is on holiday in Thailand but friends said he was safe. A close friend of the band confirmed that the rock star had been enjoying a break well away from the ravaged areas and was not in any danger. "He is enjoying a break before the new tour gets under way but has not been close to the affected areas and hasn't been in any danger at any time," he said.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: During "Love Rescue Me", Bono gives the first hint at the future of the band: "I suppose this is a kind of going away party, because I think that's what we gotta do. We've had a great ten years. We're just throwing a party for ourselves and you, and for the poeple that worked with us and those that believed in us along the way. We got to do something else the next while, just got to go away for a little bit..."
"LoveTown" tour - december 27, 1989 - U2 perform in Dublin, Ireland, at The Point Depot. The second show is much more light-hearted--the band and the crowd are over their nervousness and the tension from the media spotlight cast on the concerts. Bono jokes with the crowd, "It's great to be back in...uh...uhmmm..." "DUBLIN!" the crowd roar back. At the end of "Running to Stand Still", Bono adds a verse of "Dirty Old Town" He also comments on Irish emigration to the United States, which has increased in the past few years: "Everybody wants to live in America. No me...I love this city. I hate what some of those bastards have done to it: boring, unimaginative politicians, the arrogant architects, the back handed builders...Let them go to fucking America!" Maria McKee, former lead vocalist of "Lone Justice" joins the band for "People Get Ready"--McKee is now a resident of Dublin, and Bono claims her as his "second wife". "The queue for the third starts outside...," he jokes. During "Love Rescue Me", Bono gives the first hint at the future of the band: "I suppose this is a kind of going away party, because I think that's what we gotta do. We've had a great ten years. We're just throwing a party for ourselves and you, and for the poeple that worked with us and those that believed in us along the way. We got to do something else the next while, just got to go away for a little bit..." The next day the local papers report that the band are breaking up, and the news is carried around the world in a matter of days. THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: and all because of one man: The Edge! / Spice World better than POP (People magazine).
"LoveTown" tour - december 26, 1989 - U2 perform in Dublin, Ireland, at The Point Depot. U2 plays the first of four end-of-the-decade shows at Dublin's Point Depot. It is the band's first indoor show in Dublin since 1982. On the first night, the tension of the past few months' preparations is evident in the crew and band's behaviour before the show. The show starts with "God Part II" and the band tear into a set list heavy with "Rattle & Hum" tracks. During the intro for "Where The Streets Have No Name", Bono talks about Samuel Beckett who had passed away four days earlier: "...The whole body of the man did seem, like one whom I had met in a dream. Sam Beckett dreamt of other roads, Sam Beckett dreamt of other lands, of another home...where the streets have no name..." Before the encore of "Gloria", Bono talks about his displeasure of reports in local newpapers that the band were only out to make money for the international TV rights to the New Year's gig: "I'd like to tell you the real reason why we're playing the Point Depot here. We're not playing here because we want to send it via satellite to the rest of the world. We're not here to make a pile of dough or anything. We've been paying for ten years in these big places, and we now wanted to play a small place. It's not really that complicated..is it?" During the guitar solo in "New Year´s Day", Bono jokes about the recent political changes in Eastern Europe and the fall of the Iron Curtain: "Czecoslovakia; East Germany; Poland; Romania, and all because of one man: The Edge!" Support is B.B. King.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: wonderful TV Club / violinist and piper / Samuel Beckett passes away .
"Boy" tour - december 22, 1980 - U2 perform in Dublin, Ireland at the TV Club. Mark wrote: "I remember the occasion really well, less so the songs. I recall viewing from the top of the balcony that ran around the upper floor of the TV club - Adam stood beside us for a look at the stage before the gig started. Bono was really giving it some during the show - voice still raspy like it was back then -the Wavin pipe (if you're Irish you'll know what I mean) U2 sign behind the band. The segue into 'Into the Heart' really stands out - Edge's playing absolutely wonderful. Enthusiastic crowd, Bono climbing the amps, searching for cigarettes, sucking up every bit of energy from the crowd - it doesn't get any better than this.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: most inspiring event of the year / Bono and Pavarotti in Sarajevo!
"October" tour - december 21, 1981 - London / England - Lyceum Ballroom. Karen Swayne writes in Sounds: "What can I say? That U2 were an experience that defies the written word? That the atmosphere was one of sheer jubilation? Or maybe just that if you missed them live, you missed one of the most joyous and inspiring events of the year. Imagine the Lyceum transformed into a hall of celebration where U2´s followers could gather to pay tribute to the band they know should have been much, much bigger in 1981. We were overwhelmed by their music and lifted by their feeling, and the world outside seemed a million miles away as we were carried into a land of passion and beauty.
Bono and Pavarotti in Sarajevo - december 21, 1997. Balkans: Bono and Pavarotti visit Mostar to inaugurate cultural center that he in large part financed. Gordan Kranjcic, a 20-year-old aspiring rock musician, says that plucking at an old guitar saved his sanity during the years he was captive in a wartime prison camp. So Kranjcic watched in awe as one of the world's greatest operatic tenors, Luciano Pavarotti, joined him and a host of dignitaries and local residents amid the ruins of this war-shattered southern Bosnian city to inaugurate a super-expensive cultural center -- one designed to use music and therapy to nurture a new generation of Bosnian artists. Struggling with a bad cold that forced him to cancel concerts last week, Pavarotti -- the center's main financial backer -- braved a fierce rainstorm to fly into Mostar, accompanied by Bono, lead singer of the Irish rock group U2, and others from the European entertainment scene....Pavarotti and the London-based charity that built and will run the center, War Child, chose to place the three-story complex on the eastern, Muslim side of Mostar -- to the apparent chagrin of Bosnian Croat officials on the western side. Sunday's inauguration was hailed as a major spectacle in mostly Muslim Sarajevo, the capital, but was virtually ignored in Croat-controlled parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina....But musician and producer Brian Eno, said: "Europe failed this country. The center is a small island of success in an ocean of failure."

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Lyceum Ballroom´81 / "Sunday Bloody Sunday" in Northern Ireland for the first time / the last show of "The Joshua Tree" tour!
"Boy" tour - december 20, 1980 - U2 perform in Cork, Ireland at the Downtown Kampus.
"October" tour - december 20, 1981 - U2 perform in London, England at the Lyceum Ballroom. For the first night, Record Mirror's Gill Pringle writes, "Words fail me. Everyone is hugging each other as they stumble outside." Midway through the concert, some bouncers had slapped and attacked a fan who had gotten a bit out of hand. Larry dropped his drum sticks, jumped in the crowd and Bono quickly followed. They pulled off the bouncers, and upon returning to the stage, Bono grabbed the microphone, pointed at the worst-offending bouncer, and shouted "I want this guy out of here before we sing another song -- NOW!" U2 return to Ireland for a month for a vacation and to record "A Celebration"(which will be released as a single in the UK on March 22, 1982) before continuing to tour. Support is "The Alarm".
"Pre-War" - december 20, 1982 - U2 perform in Belfast, Northern Ireland at Maysfield Leisure Centre. U2 nervously perform "Sunday Bloody Sunday" in Northern Ireland for the first time. Bono stresses that the song is not anti-IRA, but is a pro-peace song, and promises to never perform it in Northern Ireland again if they don't like it. After the song, only a few fans boo and leave the concert hall. The vast majority of fans stay for two encores. Edge´s amplifiers blows up and has to be replaced in the middle of a song.
"The Joshua Tree" tour - december 20, 1987 - Two scheduled shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina are dropped in favour of holding two shows in Tempe, Arizona. On the second night of filming in Tempe, Arizona, Bono limits his antics and the shoot is a great success. The concert is captured for the Rattle & Hum movie. "Where The Streets Have No Name", "MLK", "With Or Without You", "Bullet The Blue Sky" and "Running To Stand Still" from the second Tempe show make it into "Rattle And Hum" and form the colour section of the movie. "Mothers Of The Disappeared", with the audience singing "El pueblo vencera" was considered for the closing sequence of the movie but rejected. The shows in Arizona are the last of the "Joshua Tree" tour.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - december 19, 1987 - U2 perform in Tempe, Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium. U2 finish the "Joshua Tree" tour with sold out shows--both are used during "Rattle And Hum". The city where the "Joshua Tree" tour started, will also be the city where the 'Joshua Tree" tour ends. The band had originally intended for the shows to be filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 20th, and 21st, but due to the cost associated with moving the entire "Joshua Tree" tour stage to South America, the plans were scrapped. Eighty extra camera-personel are hired to operate 12 extra cameras, a camera is mounted on a crane to film the crowd from above, and a helicopter will continously circle the venue. Tickets are kept cheap($5US) and are put on sale throughout the country. The first nights performance does not go well. The new cameramen have trouble keeping their cameras on Bono, and the band change the setlist during the middle of the concert--while the band play "Out of Control", a stage hand who is told to activate a large fan during the fifth song, starts the fan meant for "MLK". Support is B.B.King.
"LoveTown" tour - december 19,20 1989 Amsterdam: There is a cloud hanging over the RAI Europa Hall as fans wait to hear if Bono's voice has recovered from the night before(December 18 1989) when the show was cut short due to Bono's vocal problems. The newspapers advise listening to the radio before the show to see if the concerts will be held. The doctor that examined Bono's throat and vocal chords the night before, examines them again--the diagnosis is not good--Bono is ordered to take a break or risk permanent damage to his vocal chords. The two shows, scheduled for December 19, 20 1989 are cancelled. The doctor and concert promoter announce over the radio the doctor's findings, and that the shows have been rescheduled for January 5,6,9 and 10 1990 at the 8,000 capacity Ahoy Sports Palace in Rotterdam. The 16,000 tickets for the December 19th show will go towards the January 5th and 6th dates, while the December 20th show will go toward the January 9th and 10th dates. The promoter explains that because of U2's schedule it is not possible to hold a new concert for those that attend the December 18th, 1989 show--however, fans can send their ticket stubs to the promoter and 6,000 will be granted tickets for the 4 new shows, while the remaining 10,000 will get refunds. Back at the hotel, Bono is seen playing guitar for a few fans and singing--his voice is extremely rough. He and the rest of the band quietly give autographs and pose for photographs when asked to. He is clearly distraught at the problem he has caused, and Adam is overheard to comment that Bono really feels bad for the people of Amsterdam.

In between the 1st and 2nd encores, the entire crew stands around the ellipse, wearing single-letter t-shirts that spell out THE U2 CREW THANKS BONO, EDGE, LARRY, AND ADAM FOR A GREAT 2005. **** Some photos on: U2-vertigo-tour

"Pre-War" tour - december 18, 1982 - U2 perform in Cork, Ireland at City Hall.
"The Big One" - december 18, 1983 - U2 perform in London, England at the Victory Apollo as part of "The Big One". The concert includes performances by Elvis Costello, "The Style Council", and "The Alarm". The concert is organized by the Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament(CND) to protest agains the nuclear arms race. All proceeds from the concert go to the CND. Of special note, U2´s Edge sings a moving version of "Seconds", a song about nuclear disaster("It takes a second to say goodbye"). Mike Peters, lead singer of "The Alarm", joins U2 for Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".
"The Joshua Tree" tour - december 18, 1987 - U2 are interviewed on Arizona's KUPO radio. Bono reveals the bands original intentions to release a live album and a studio album instead of "Rattle & Hum". "See if you recognise this one, one of our early hits," Edge starts off, and plays the intro of the Led Zeppelin classic "Starway To Heaven" on acoustic guitar. Edge sings and plays a full version of "Lost Highway" to illustrate that they always wanted to be a country band. Edge says: "We´re gonna try something new with the last track on "The Joshua Tree", "Mothers Of The Disappeared". We have put some Spanish words together, we´re so close to a Spanish speaking part of the world, we felt that maybe people at the concert might pick up on this lyric." *EL PUEBLO VENCERA, WHICH MEANS: THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL OVERCOME.* Edge plays the melody of "Mothers Of The Disappeared" on the guitar and sings these words and Bono briefly joins in second voice. After the late night interview, U2 return to Sun Devil Stadium to continue rehearsing. The police register over 300 complaints as the rehearsal takes them into 4:00 in the morning.
"LoveTown" tour - december 18, 1989 - U2 perform in Amsterdam, Holland at RAI Europa Hall. Tickets are sold by lottery for originally what were three planned concerts in Amsterdam. Only 24,000 people will be selected to get tickets for the shows. The concert is held at the RAI Complex because the city of Amsterdam itself lacks a proper venue. Seats are erected at the back of the facility, and on the sides of the facility--however, most of the 16,000 fans are standing on the floor. The concerts starts with the usual "Hawkmoon 269", and then the band go into "I Will Follow". It is obvious that Bono's voice is strained, and he stops to explain to the crowd that he is having a problem. Bono's voice cuts in and out during "God Part II", and lets the crowd sing most of "New Year's Day". The band leave the stage and discuss the situation backstage. They quickly decide to cut the concert short and give a free concert for the 16,000 fans that are present at a later date. Bono returns to the stage with the announcement, "Well, this has never happened to U2 before, but this is now a free concert in Amsterdam," and then the band go into "40". By the end of the song it is abudantly clear to everyone in the venue, that Bono cannot sing. While the crowd sing "How long to sing this song" the concert promoter comes on stage and addresses the crowd: "Quiet...Quiet please...you may have heard...Bono can't sing another note. With a hundred thousand apologies, to the best audience of the tour so far. His voice is gone...we have to end now." The crowd start to whistle and boo and the promoter continues, "One thing: Hold on to your tickets!" and repeats the phrase several times. The booing slowly turns into cheering as the crowd realize what Bono's comment meant--the tickets are going to be refunded, or U2 will give a free concert for tonight's crowd. Bono travels to a hospital after the show, and is told to rest his vocal chords for the night. He is told to return to the hospital first thing in the morning.

DECEMBER 16:
THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Eddie van Edge / "Happy Christmas" during Late Late Show / Bono is clearly in pain.
"Pre-War" tour - december 16, 1982. U2 perform in Oslo, Norway.
"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - december 16, 1984. U2 perform in Los Angeles, California at Long Beach Arena. As at the concert the night before in San Francisco, the concert goes on with an excited but non-violent crowd. Edge is dubbed Eddie van Edge by Bono during the guitar solo in "Party Girl", at the end of which Bono gets tour manager Dennis Sheehan on stage while claiming the U2 road crew to be the best in the world and that "behind every successful man there is another successful man. Bono wishes the crowd a merry Christmas, and tells them that "we'll see you in the new year!". Support is "The Waterboys". After the show, U2 return to Ireland for a 6 week vacation. Plans are made to do replacement shows that were cancelled in Europe in October 1984.
"Happy Christmas" - december 16, 1988. U2 perform in Dublin, Ireland at RTE Studios on the Late Late Show. They perform John Lennon's "Happy Christmas(War is Over)".
"LoveTown" tour - december 16, 1989 - Dortmund, Germany. The third night is drastically different from the first two--Bono's voice is suffering severely. During the encore, Bono introduces B.B.King´s band, wishes them a Happy Christmas. While Edge is aching to start "Angel Of Harlem", Bono sings "White Christmas", surprising everybody including the band; Edge looks on bewildred while the crowd pick up the song and Bono joins in again to bring it to an exhilaring end. During "Love Rescue Me", Bono is unable to continue and gestures to the band that his throat is bothering him. He misses complete lines and is clearly in pain. He motions everyone forward at the end of the song to come for a bow--the crowd start cheering and then start to boo the band. Backstage, Bono is clearly distraught at not being able to continue, but his voice is so bad he cannot formulate the words to apologize. Support is B.B. King.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: U2 billed as the U2s / Edge has the flu / The Dalton Brothers appear in the middle of U2's set and it's actually U2's crew dressed up as the band's alter-ego / "he looks like a woman" / last American POPMart / 106th 'VERTIGO' show: ESPN films the concert / "City Of Blinding Lights' for World Cup 2006 / Happy B-Day for Frank Sinatra!! "London Club" tour - december 12, 1979 - U2 perform in Uxbridge, England at Brunel University, as support for "The Photos". Again, they are billed as the "U2s" on posters for the event.
"Boy" tour - december 12, 1980 - U2 perform in Providence, Rhode Island at the Main Event.
"October" tour - december 12, 1981 - U2 perform in Hartford, Connecticut at Stage West.
"Pre-War" tour - december 12, 1982 - U2 perform in Genk, Belgium at Limburghall. Not having enough time to do a proper soundcheck, the concert suffers from bad acoustics. Bono also explains that The Edge has the 'flu.
"The Joshua Tree" tour - december 12, 1987 - U2 perform in Hampton, Virginia at the Coliseum. The second night is "The BoDeans" last night as opening act for U2. For their last song, they announce The Edge as guest guitarist. Larry walks on stage with a megaphone, which he quickly hands to Bono who shouts, "The BoDeans, yeah!" repeatedly. "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" is played for the first time since August 25, 1985. "Mothers of The Disappeared" is played for the first time since May 3, 1987. After "In God's Country" Bono says, "Well, we started off about 11 years ago, when I was 16, Larry was 14, Edge was 15 and Adam was 36. We just wanted to be in a band. And the person who owned the worst record collection got to be the drummer. He was particularily fond of 'The Eagles', do you remember them? This is a favorite song of Larry's..it's another 'Peculiar[Tequila] Sunrise'," at which point Bono hands Larry the microphone. Larry's voice breaks and sounds uneven indicating his nervousness about performing in front of a crowd. After two verses, he shakily says, "It's really embarrasing, what can I say? You've been a lovely audience..." Bono comes to the rescue and asks the crowd to sing a few lines for Larry. During a particularily bad version of "Out of Control" in which The Edge forgets to play the guitar solo, Bono explains: "Ladies and Gentlemen. As living proof that anyone can make it to the top: Bono, Edge, Larry and Adam." Bono's speech in "Bullet The Blue Sky" is aimed at the positives and negatives of the United States: "There's kids being ripped off, syringes stuck in their arms, and peope inventing new drugs like Crack so they can fuck 'em up even more....[and the one] where 17,000 people can get together in one night and agree on rock & roll music, as rock & roll is the soundtrack to some kind of change...We got Amnesty International people over here...people working for Third World relief organizations over there. If this is America, I LIKE IT! And I feel a long way from the hills of San Salvador, where the sky was ripped open, and the rain pours through a gaping wound...pelting the women and children...pelting the women and children...who run...and they run...into the arms...into your arms. Look after them." At the end of the night, U2 again pull "The Dalton Brothers" gag. Bono is thanking everyone who had worked so hard on the tour, and specifically points out Joe O'Herlihy who was returning back to Ireland to join his expectant wife. "But there's one person I'd like to thank as without him this whole tour just wouldn't be possible. I'd like to introduce you to him now, Dallas Shocc Dalton. He's over here." Guitar technician Dallas Schoo joins the band on stage, dressed in the typical strange Dalton Brothers clothing. Three more roadies join U2 on stage. "Hi y'all! We're the Dalton gang here! This here is Betty Dalton, there's Alton Dalton, Duke Dalton, and I'm Luke! We're all from Galveston, Texas, except Duke here--he's from Dallas." The 8 musicians perform a strange version of "Lucille" which features Bono singing, "Oh Suzannah, whe know you're doing the best you can, come dance with me, until the morning sets you free..." As "The Dalton Brothers" leave the stage, Bono remarks, "Oh my, Betty...do you grow prettier every day?" Support is "The BoDeans".
"LoveTown" tour - december 12, 1989 - U2 perform in Paris, France at the Palais Omnisports De Bercy. On the second night, Bono calls out B.B. King's band for "People Get Ready" and announces, "We're on tour with these men, and we feel like we're at school learning so much from these people!" During the song, he has trouble finding a girl to play the guitar: "I refuse to believe there's no young lady rock & roll players in Paris!" he shouts. A man eventually comes on stage, and Bono jokes "Well, he looks like a woman...he'll do..." Support is B.B. King.
"POPMart" tour - december 12, 1997 - U2 perform in Seattle, Washington. It is the final POPMart show held in North America. It is a special night. The 100-foot arch is adorned with a Christmas tree, whose lights will go on and off in tune with various songs, and Bono's boxer's cape on this night is red-and-white -- the boxing Santa! During "Even Better Than the Real Thing," a handful of crew come on-stage behind Edge and Bono, all wearing the same muscle-man shirt Bono has worn throughout the tour. During "If You Wear That Velvet Dress," the girl Bono dances with is actually bass technician Stuart Morgan, who promptly grabs Bono's arse before leaving the stage. The show has its more poignant moments, too -- as Bono introduces "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," U2 fan tosses his Santa cap on-stage. Bono picks it up and puts it on, saying "And the Lord said 'Humble thyself, Bono!'" Later, Bono takes a plastic container of soap bubbles from a fan and sits on the edge of the b-stage blowing bubbles as he sings. As the band heads to the main stage after "With or Without You," Bono brings two fans -- two "Wire" mailing list members -- on stage, and thanks all the fans on "Wire," many of whom have come to Seattle and crowded around the catwalk and b-stage for tonight's show. As the show ends with "Wake Up, Dead Man," Larry and Adam head off-stage -- Bono and Edge are about to follow when Bono walks toward Edge, and after a brief conversation, both take their places and finish 1997 with a duet on "40." To date, PopMart has sold 1.7 million tickets, more than any concert tour of the year, and grossed the band $79.9 million for 46 shows in 37 cities.
106th 'VERTIGO' show - December 12, 2005 / Charlotte, NC - New Charlotte Arena - Institute - ESPN films the concert / "City Of Blinding Lights' for World Cup 2006 / Happy B-Day for Frank Sinatra! City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, Elevation, Gloria, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - In a Little While, Beautiful Day - Many Rivers to Cross, Original of the Species, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, Love and Peace or Else, Sunday Bloody Sunday - Rock the Casbah, Bullet the Blue Sky, Miss Sarajevo, Pride, Where the Streets Have No Name, One. Encore(s): Until the End of the World, Mysterious Ways, With or Without You, Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Yahweh, 40. A half-dozen cameras from the sports network ESPN film the concert tonight. U2 has given ESPN permission to use 'City of Blinding Lights' for its upcoming coverage of the 2006 World Cup. Before the show, U2's crew works with the ESPN crew to shoot the pixel panels as they show the flags of all the countries that will be taking part in next year's World Cup. Before 40, Bono led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday for Frank Sinatra, who would have turned ninety today. **** Some photos on: U2tours
