THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: "song that you play in your own bedroom when no one is listening" / Madres de La Plaza de Mayo on-stage during the first ever show in Argentina / Bono with Fanning.
"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - february 5, 1985. U2 perform in Bologna, Italy at the Teatro Tenda. On the first night, Bono again yells "La prima, ma non ultima volta!" (The first but not the last time!) during "I Will Follow". Bono introduces "Seconds" as being "a message to the President!" The crowd is extremely excited, but there are no serious problems. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is played before "40" and is introduced as a "song that you play in your own bedroom when no one is listening." This version is still heavily improvised as Bono still doesn't know all the lyrics, and jokes about it during the song--"If you know the words just sing along, it doesn't matter if you make them right or wrong..."
"POPMart" tour - february 5, 1998. At the first of three shows in Buenos Aires -- the band's first shows ever in Argentina -- U2 brings a large group of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo on-stage as the band sings "One." The show ends with "Mothers of the Disappeared," during which most of the Mothers are brought to Bono's microphone to share the name of their "missing" children.
Bono chats with Fanning on Irish TV - february 5, 2000. Bono appears on RTE's "Saturday Night Live" TV program, which is hosted this week by longtime friend Dave Fanning. Fanning interviews Bono, but no songs are sung.

"The Unforgettable Fire" tour - february 4, 1985. U2 perform in Milan, Italy at the Palazetto Dello Sport. During a stop on the way to Milan, someone vandalizes the tour trucks and puts sugar in the gas tanks. The band arrive at the Palazetto Dello Sport just in time to play the concert, and go on stage without performing a soundcheck. "La prima, ma non ultima volta," Bono shouts from the stage--"The first but not the last time!" The band are very well received and each song is lapped up hysterically.
"U2 meet with Argentina's famous "Madres of the Plaza de Mayo" human rights group" - february 4, 1998. The group is investigating the whereabouts of the estimated 30,000 people who disappeared during Argentina's last dictatorship. While in Buenos Aires, Argentina, U2 meets with the famous "Madres de Plaza de Mayo" human rights group, which has made regular marches around the Plaza de Mayo in front of the Argentine Presidential Palace since the darkest days of that country's 1976-1983 military dictatorship to demand justice for their missing children. This Argentine group is similar to the El Salvador-based group Bono wrote about in the 1987 song "Mothers of the Disappeared."
Tickets for U2 Dublin show sell out in record time - february 4, 2005 - U2's record-breaking run of ticket sales for their forthcoming world tour, continued today with the sell-out of two concerts in Dublin. Over 150,000 tickets sold out in just under an hour for the two shows, which will take place at Croke Park in Dublin on June 24 and 25. The tickets went on sale at 8am this morning, priced between 59.50 and 80 euros, alongside tickets for shows in Paris and Nice. The Dublin concerts are part of the Irish rockers' Vertigo world tour, which kicks off in San Diego on March 28 and includes 13 other US shows, as well as 24 concerts in Europe. U2 have already sold out concerts in Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff and London in the UK, as well as a number of shows in the USA, including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia and the opening European date in Brussels. Many extra dates have had to be added to cope with the extraordinary demand for tickets. "U2 performs at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVI" - february 3, 2002. U2 performs at halftime of Super Bowl XXXVI in New Orleans. Bono walks through the crowd to take the stage as 'Beautiful Day' begins. A larger version of the heart is used for the stage, surrounded by people on the field and in the heart. As 'MLK' starts a screen rises from the back of the stage, which scrolls the names of the people lost in the World Trade Center disaster, fire and police departments, on the flights, and in the buildings themselves. The scrolling continues through most of 'Where the Streets Have No Name.' As the band's performance comes to an end, Bono reveals the U.S. flag-like lining of his jacket. The band's performance is well-received by both football fans and the media, as well as by other musicians who performed prior to the game including Paul McCartney and Mariah Carey. As for the game, the New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams 20-17 on a field goal on the game's last play. watch "Beautiful Day" here - watch "MLK/Streets" here
"McGuinness adds new band to stable" - february 3, 2004.Irish media report today that Paul McGuinness has agreed to manage a new band, The Rapture. The Irish Voice describes the New York-based quartet as a "dance rock" band. McGuinness is quoted as saying "These people are a dynamite live act, and that's kind of what I like best about rock 'n' roll."
An open letter from Larry Mullen - february 3, 2005 - This is not something that I would normally do, but I feel that I have to do something to redress this situation. There was a mess up in the way the tickets were distributed through U2.com for the Vertigo pre-sale. Some of it was beyond our control, but some of it wasn't. I am now in the process of figuring out a way of distributing the tickets for our intended return to North America in the fall. The only fair way of doing this, is to give U2 Propaganda members, who are now U2.com members, priority in the queue. After that, people will be given priority in the order in which they joined. Many people who joined U2.com and didn't get tickets are understandably angry. They now have the option to get a full refund of their subscription fee. The idea that our long-time U2 fans and scalpers competed for U2 tickets through our own web site is appalling to me. I want to apologise to you who have suffered that. If your U2.com pre-sale experience has left you disappointed, I hope this will go some way towards reassuring you of our total commitment to our audience. Slainte Larry. By the way, a note to those so-called U2 fans who are quick to accuse U2 of unseemly behaviour, I've only got two words for you...

By the end of Streets Bono sings ****Ah eu to maluco****, which means ****Ah I´m crazy****Bono wishes Brazilian Soccer star Romario a Happy Birthday, at the start of "Staring At The Sun". During "Bullet the Blue Sky" he add the words "Brazilians, don't run!" (To the arms of America) as an encouragement to the Brazilian Youth that lives at the present time a huge lack of opportunities and jobs in a country that had been careless to the needs of College Education. As a curiosity only, is fair to say that not even one bad incident ocurred before, during or after this show, actually this is a trademark of U2 fans, we are worldwide unique and special just like our favorite Rock and Roll Band. Look for Bono and Edge during Staring At The Sun, here. 1998: U2 stayed 7 days in Rio (one show) and 2 days (two shows) in Sao Paulo - Adam and Bono arrived on jan 24, 1998, the first time in Brazil, in Rio. There´s a famous photo of U2 in a balcony showing all of them a yellow shirt. Behind Bono is the major, in 1998, of the Rio de Janeiro, Luiz Paulo Conde, which presented the band with Romario´s shirt, signed by him. When Larry was leaving Rio in direction to Sao Paulo, he told that he would like, only good things to Sao Paulo´s shows, with a face very very upset (cause the chaotic traffic-car in Rio before the show, and many many fans didn´t see the full concert); Bono said, that Rio has the beautiful girls and the ugly men, of course, in reference to the bad organization of Rio´s show. source: Showbiz in Brazil look for this scan here Listen to this show: (you must logg in) here
After the show, on jan 30, 1998, Edge, Adam and Larry have a dinner at 'Leopoldo restaurant'; they arrived at 3:00 a.m., met Pele, which that time was the Minister of Sports. Adam Clayton went to a party at B.A.S.E club, organised by the Brazilian production of the shows at that time. Still at the dress room of Morumbi stadium, Edge invited a fan, Lilian Vituzzo, to go with them to the B.A.S.E.´s party, but an aunt of her was dead and she had to deny. So, Edge and Larry, didn´t go to the party. Adam stayed at the party for 20 minutes. - source: O Estado de Sao Paulo - feb 1, 1998 and ShowBizz magazine. Look for Edge in front of Leopoldo here

"The Unforgettable Fire" - january 25, 1985 - U2 perform in Stockholm, Sweden at the Ice Stadium. Mans Ivarson reviews the concert for a Swedish newspaper: "A your-arms-around-me dance on the stage of the Isstadion in front of 10,000 overcome fans as the singer Bono asked a girl from the crowd for a dance. That was the highlight of Irishmen's U2 rock mass yesterday. Rock mass! Yes, there was such an overflow of traditional rock symbols and gestures that it almost looked like a religious ritual. The fans had lighters, sparklers, flags and an enormous enthusiasm. U2's skill to caress and bait a rock crowd is not far removed from Bruce Springsteen's. Bono makes a big effort for the people in the bad seats and he occasionally is almost down in the crowd, flattering us fro our good English and thanking us deeply for coming. Sing for John Lennon, sing for Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix -- Bono and U2 not even for a moment let us forget that they represent the good guys in rock. Sure they are pleasant even if it can get a little bit too cute. But the music is hardly cute. It's hard, hypnotic rock with [The] Edge, the remarkable guitarist, as the leader. I don't understand how he does it, but his tones are like a never ending shooting star, forever glittering against a dark and cold backdrop."
Edge and Larry in Brazil - janaury 25, 1998 - Edge and Larry arrived, exactly 6 years ago, on jan 25, in Rio de Janeiro. This night Adam and Bono go to Salgueiro school-samba in Rio de Janeiro, they were seating in a VIP area, then Bono jumps to the floor where he dances with the people, while Adam (now, with moustache) is seating. A Very hot night!
Bono sings with The Corrs - january 25, 2002. Bono performs two songs with The Corrs, who are taping a live TV special for the U.S. in a studio outside Dublin. He duets with Andrea Corr on Ryan Adams's "When the Stars Go Blue" and on "Summer Wine," originally made famous by Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra. The Corrs' performance is recorded and will be released as a CD and TV special in March. Both songs with Bono are included.
Vertigo Tour ticket presale fails before it starts - january 25, 2005. What should be a time of joy for U2 fans around the world almost immediately becomes a nightmare as the online presale of Vertigo Tour tickets to paid U2.com members is a dismal failure. Tens of thousands of fans try to buy tickets via Ticketmaster and other official ticket outlets worldwide, but very few are able. Web sites crash and ticketing systems fail leaving most fans unable to even get a chance at buying tickets. The few U2.com members who are able to get past technical problems find that what were marketed as "some of the best seats in the house" are most commonly tickets in the upper levels of arenas, or far away seats at stadiums. Making matters worse is that thousands of General Admission tickets -- the actual "best seats in the house" -- are immediately listed for sale on auction and ticket broker web sites. The failure is a marketing disaster for U2, whose U2.com web site had charged members up to $40 for the opportunity to take part in the presale, selling the memberships with promises of "guaranteed priority booking" of concert tickets, and telling members of the now-defunct Propaganda offline fan club that they'd "go to the front of the line" during today's presale. Almost immediately, internet mailing lists and message boards are filled with the anger of thousands of fans who feel cheated out of $40 by the band they love. Some fans go so far as to suggest legal action against the band. U2.com itself remains largely mum on the issue, at first brushing off the problems as the result of incredible demand for U2 tickets. The uproar continues for a week, as U2 fan web sites continue to report on all the developments and push for the band to rectify the situation. It takes five days for Ticketmaster, acting at the request of U2, to begin making amends to U2 fans whose presale ticket purchases were killed by technical problems. And finally, a week after the presale failure, U2.com issues an apology for "inadvertently" giving the impression that U2.com members were guaranteed tickets. They offer a refund of U2.com membership fees to anyone who didn't use the presale password to purchase tickets.
Bono in Davos - january 25, 2006 - Bono has launched Product RED, a global brand which will raise funds to fight AIDS in Africa. It's not philanthropy, he said, but 'doing good, will turn out to be doing good business.' The launch of RED took place in Davos, Switzerland today, when Bono joined with American Express, Gap, Converse and Giorgio Armani to unveil the T-shirts, shoes, sunglasses and credit card which are the first items in the new line. A portion of profits from the sale of RED products will support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tubercolosis and Malaria, particularly programmes in Africa with a focus on women and children.

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: Bono inducts Bob Marley / "Hands" wins a Golden Globe!
"Bono inducts Bob Marley" - january 19, 1994 - Bono inducts Bob Marley into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York. (Here's the poem/speech Bono wrote and read when he was asked to induct the late Bob Marley into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 19, 1994.) "I know claiming Bob Marley is Irish might be a little difficult here tonight, but bear with me. Jamaica and Ireland have a lot in common: Naomi Campbell, Chris Blackwell, Guinness, a fondness for little green leaves -- the weed. Religion. The philosophy of procrastination -- don't put off 'til tomorrow what you can put off til the day after. Unless, of course, it's freedom. We are both islands; we were both colonies. We share a common yoke: the struggle for identity, the struggle for independence, the vulnerable and uncertain future that's left behind when the jackboot of empire is finally retreated. The roots, the getting up, the standing up, and the hard bit: the staying up. In such a struggle, the voice of Bob Marley was the voice of reason. These were love songs that you could admit listening to; songs of hurt, hard but healing, tough going; songs of Freedom, where that word meant something again; Redemption songs. A sexy revolution where Jah is Jehovah on street level. Not over his people but with his people. Not just stylin', jammin'. Down the line of Judah, from Ethiopia, where it all began for the Rastaman. I spent some time in Ethiopia with my wife, Ali, and everywhere we went we saw Bob Marley's face. There he was, dressed to hustle God. Let my people go. An ancient plea. Prayers catching fire in Mozambique, Nigeria, the Lebanon, Alabama, Detroit, New York, Notting Hill, Belfast. Dr. King in dreads. A Third and a First World superstar. Mental slavery ends where imagination begins. Here was this new music, rocking out of the shantytowns, lolling, loping rhythms, telling it like it was, like it is, like it ever shall be. Skanking. Ska. Blue Beat. Rock Steady. Reggae. Dub. And now ragga. And all of this from a man who drove three BMWs. BMW -- Bob Marley and the Wailers, that was his excuse! Rock and roll loves its juvenilia, its caricatures, its cartoons. The protest singer, the pop star, the sex god, your mature messiah types [laughs]. We love the extremes, and we're expected to choose: the mud of the blues or the oxygen of gospel, the hellhounds on our trail or the band of angels. Well, Bob Marley didn't choose or walk down the middle. He raced to the edges, embracing all extremes, creating a oneness. His oneness. One love. He wanted everything at the same time. Prophet. Soul rebel. Rastaman. Herbsman. Wildman. A natural, mystic man. Lady's man. Island man. Family man. Rita's man. Soccer man. Showman. Shaman. Human. Jamaican! So the spirit of Bob and the spirit of Jah lives on, in his son Ziggy and his lover Rita Marley. I'm proud to welcome Bob Marley into the Hall of Fame. Amen!

THIS DAY - U2´S HISTORY: the end of "LoveTown" tour!
"LoveTown" tour - january 10, 1990 - Rotterdam / Holland - The fourth night is the final performance of the "LoveTown" tour. Two hours before the show, Bono steps outside to sign autographs. The show begins with an incredible performace of "Bullet The Blue Sky". Bono wanders throughout the arena during the song, and security struggle to keep up with him. He returns to the stage for the start of "Desire", during which he sings parts of "1969" and "So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star". From the view from the sides of the stage, drum technician Sam O'Sullivan can be seen drumming along to most of the songs. A spoken word version of a verse of "In God's Country" is used as the introduction to "All Along The Watchtower". "Slow Dancing" is played for the first time since its public performance in Osaka, Japan on December 1, 1989. The encore is remarkable for the thank-you's addressed to the crew. The first come before the performance and during the introduction of "Love Rescue Me". Bono thanks everyone for being "a hero of mine": B.B. King, The Edge, Larry Mullen, Adam, Lighting designer Peter Williams, sound engineer Joe O'Herlihy, bass technician Shelley, guitar technician Fraser McAllister, drum technician Sam O'Sullivan, A.J. Hewson. Bono attempts to pull manager Paul McGuinness on stage, but he refuses and Bono points to him, "There's a man hiding down there...Paul McGuinness, manager of U2...he's a hero of mine. The list goes on and on...just like we hope to do." The second group of "heroes" comes midway through "Love Rescue Me", "Sophia and Claudia are heroes of mind, Regine Moylett, hero of mine...Douglas, Dave, Steve, our tour manager Dennis Sheehan, Tim..." Bono turns to the audience to address them, "And while we're at it, you're all f---ing heroes of mine!" At the end of the encore, the band, and B.B. King's band stand hand-in-hand in a long chain down the front of the stage. U2 return for a surprise second encore, and offer stunning performances of "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" and "Out of Control". Silhouettes of two crew members doing aerobatic tricks on ropes appear behind the stage. A white flag with "U2: A Celebration" written on it is thrown on stage at the end of the show. Bono drapes it across the drum kit and says, "You could call it that, all right..." The other three members of the band leave the stage, leaving Bono shining a spotlight over the audience. He waves "Good-bye" for a few seconds and then is gone. The "LoveTown" tour is over, and now, U2 take a two year break from touring.
